A classmate asked me to draw this for her...a car her father owned a long time ago. It's a 1962 Mercury Monterey. This was a challenge as I couldn't find any good images on the web and the one I used for this was black with flames. Oh well, I think she'll be happy with it...hope you like it too.

Illustrator CS2....about 5 hours.

no they don't do us justice, especially color-wise. what's new in CS? i've been thinking about getting a newer version but i rarely ever use anything asside from the pen tool, standard gradients (linear/circle) and that's it. sometimes blend and i use several compound paths of course.

There are updated filter options...kinda like photoshop (blurs, static). The gradient mesh tool is easier to use (i don't use them). They also have 3D effects, live trace for the cheaters out there. If 9 works for you, by all means stick with it unless you want to make a career out vector designs. CS2 just has more options.

i hear ya except .... if i'm not going to use the options why upgrade? those options aren't real/pure vector (i guess) work and some like you say, are cheater tools, so......

the GM tool for me should only have a small role in car art simply because it isn't very useful or practical for the look of vector work. if i wanted it to look 3D i'd just get 3D software. since that isn't the goal and the fact that using 9 hasn't stopped me from getting paid so far, i don't see what it has to do with a career exactly. being current is another story all together and i've only been thinking of upgrading for that reason. 9.0 has nearly all the filters PS 7 had if not all, and i don't use a single one. i can't see a point in illustrator even having filters in the first place other than Adobe has the skills to do it. i mean when some people look at "vector" art they, including DA when you submit, don't want to see filters used. it's whatever looks cool to me, but this is just how i do it. i'm not trying to claim to be some kind of hard core vector purist.

I understand your points. I only use filters to give texture to pavement and such, not like it needs it. As for the career end...upgrading just makes transfering files between systems easier, again, not like you need it. I probably would still be on 10 if i didn't need CS2 for school.=)

this look seems to be a style all of its own so i wouldn't say that it looks rough .... it's like rotoscope or whatever.

it looks better as a illustrator document...jpegs don't do us vector artists justice. My friend (the one i did it for) loved it, thats all that really matters.

you have a great gallery...you should up grade to CS or CS2, much easier to use.=)
